Woolies have turned an easter staple into an ice cream

Game. Set. Match.

Coles may have released hot cross buns on Boxing Day, but this morning Woolworths took it one step further by announcing they will be selling limited edition, hot cross bun flavoured ice cream. Sweet move, Woolies.

There’s no denying Aussies love their buns — in fact last year customers enjoyed more than 72 million Woolies hot cross buns and in January alone, it sold more than 10 million of them, marking a 10 per cent growth in popularity year on year.

But this just added a whole new dimension to the Easter treat. The new Hot Cross Bun Flavoured Ice Cream is made up of juicy raisins and a smooth hot cross bun flavour ripple, complete with fresh Australian cream — a perfect summer combo.

Traditional hot cross buns remain the favourite for customers, accounting to close to 60 per cent of sales, but non-traditional varieties grow in popularity each year, with last year’s popular brioche style returning to the mix once again.

And according to Woolies’ head baker Ben Thompson, there’s plenty of more where this came from.

“Our team of bakers have been busy in the kitchen coming up with a whole bunch of new ideas and we’ll have lots more to surprise and delight our customers with our hot cross bun range in the lead-up to Easter,” he said.
