Convenience store chain 7-Eleven Australia has gone recently cashless and cardless in Melbourne by allowing customers to shop using their smartphones.
7-Eleven’s new store has no checkout counters and everything is available while shopping on the app. Aussies can go around the stores and choose products then simply scan the barcodes at the checkout counters and pay via the app.
Angus McKay, 7-Eleven CEO, said that 7-Eleven is committed to providing more enjoyable and convenient shopping experiences.
“Nobody likes to wait, so eliminating queues was part of the mission for this mobile checkout. In the new concept store, customers will notice the absence of a counter. The store feels more spacious and customers avoid being funnelled to a checkout location creating a frictionless in-store experience,” McKay said.
The convenience store said that workers can now focus on customers and on delivering its food offerings. It was first trialed at 7-Eleven’s Exhibition Street Melbourne store while still having the traditional point of sale system, before it fully launched the cashless and cardless offering at the new concept store in Richmond – as part of the business’ new national office.
“Continuing our focus on providing ultimate convenience, this year we’re trialing a catering service, and we’re thinking about ways to provide an extraordinary experience to more customers, more often, in more ways that suit them. That might be delivery, it might be micro store formats. We’re trying to push the notion of ‘convenience’ to its absolute limit.”
Aussies can create a user profile on their smartphone app, link their credit cards and upload a selfie. This will allow them to check out faster without having to queue or re-enter their payment details.
